Americans Polarized? That’s What They Want!
Americans Polarized? That’s What They Want!
Lura Forcum, April 17.

Hi friends,
On Tuesday night, we gathered folks from across the political spectrum for a series of focus groups. I walked away with 15 pages of notes—and a full heart.
The conversations were funny, honest, and deeply human. People shared their hopes, their frustrations, and their fears. And at the end of each session, we asked: What did you learn tonight?
Again and again, we heard the same thing: “We’re different in so many ways—our clothes, our jobs, our childhoods—but we care about the same things. We want the same things.”
So if we're so united at our core, why does our politics feel so broken?
Because division has become a business model. The parties have learned that fear, outrage, and contempt get clicks, raise money, and rally voters. So every election season, they flood our feeds and living rooms with toxic sludge. And it works—until the ads stop, and people return to real life and real concerns.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
We can make division unprofitable—and make unity powerful again. And independents are key to that future. We’re not buying into the outrage machine, and we’re not funding it with our wallets or our attention.
At the Independent Center, we’re building a new kind of home—a home for independents and the independent minded. A place where people believe we can govern ourselves, humanely and wisely. A place where better is possible.
Whether you’re passionate about supporting third-party candidates or just want the freedom to vote for the person, not the party, we welcome you.
Help us build this home by sending this newsletter to somebody you think should be a part of this community.
Together, we can change the system—and make it work for all Americans.
Best,
Lura
Who are Independents?
Spoiler: they’re a lot more common than the media wants you to think.

The Independent Center is the go-to organization for information, research, and engagement with independent voters, who now make up the plurality of the electorate.
We represent those who are fed up with partisan politics and feel politically homeless. We believe the future is not red or blue; it’s fiscally responsible, socially inclusive, and free to choose the best options for ourselves, our families, and our communities.
