The Dog Days of Summer

Hi Friends,

Summer months are typically a time for rest and relaxation from the busy routine of our daily lives. This past week, I was able to enjoy the sun and salt with my family at the beach.

After a busy period, a break is much-needed. But for our Congressional leaders, they’re taking yet another break after not solving some pressing issues. In fact, so many things are unresolved that we might be heading towards a government shutdown next month…

Republicans and Democrats are both responsible for not doing their jobs. And it’s no wonder that many Americans are ready for more choices.

Consider this key data point from the Bullfinch Group’s latest polling: nearly 60% of nationwide respondents believe that voters should have more choices on the ballot, including independent and third-party candidates, to better represent diverse perspectives and offer more solutions.

Want something that Republicans, Democrats, and independents can all agree on? Republicans (65%), Democrats (70%) and independents (74%) all believe that an independent that works with both sides of the aisle to solve our problems would be a good thing.

So while Congress is out on vacation, let’s take a minute to reflect on a major unifying idea: we need more choices in our politics.

Enjoy the last month of summer!

This Week in Congress

Congress is on recess until September 2

Both the House and Senate are on their annual August break. While lawmakers are away from Washington, behind-the-scenes negotiations are heating up over how to fund the government before the new fiscal year starts on October 1

Budget battles are brewing

Before recess, the Senate passed three bipartisan spending bills, but major disagreements remain. The House wants deeper cuts, and there's tension over whether previously approved funds could be clawed back. A government shutdown is a real possibility if no deal is reached next month

Tariffs and tax talk continue

President Trump has imposed new tariffs on dozens of countries, and there's ongoing debate about a potential new tax bill. Democrats want to extend health care tax credits, while Republicans are pushing for entitlement cuts. No clear path forward yet
